What are the different ways we can promote the reliability of search engines?

These reasons include spam, confusion, and similarities, which eventually make so many people displeased.

The natural presence of spam

Everybody hates spam. But it is unfortunately a natural part of giving the world a communal electronic platform where they can post whatever they want to. Unfortunately, it is very difficult for search engines to filter out every piece of spam that is generated, as it is generated on a daily, but that does not necessarily mean that it is impossible.

A variety of social media sites such as Facebook are beginning to flag fake or repetitive content aimed at misleading the audience. This can be mediated by creating algorithms to look for general patterns of spam activity, essentially nipping it at the bud. This however is not a perfect method, but it has so much future applicability for search engines as well!

But what is reliable?

The real question comes when you actually question what it is you really want out of your search. The word ‘reliable’ itself can mean so many different things to people. Some may believe some things to be correct whilst others would disagree. Here we must begin to separate facts from opinions. But what becomes dangerous is when facts are merged with opinions.

The key to improving this is allowing the presence of opinions, but, as with spam, flagging any inaccuracies that support that fallacy. This can clearly be seen in political posts, as if someone is a staunch supporter of a certain political faction, they be inclined to disapprove of the language used by their opponent, which is okay in itself, but this approach allows the prevention of disapprovals relying on incorrect facts, increasing the reliability of the results that are generated by search engines.

Confusion on the part of the searcher

So many problems can arise when the searcher may not be sure what they are searching for. You may think that you are typing one word in, but a similar word result may come up which you may be inclined to look at, believing it is the same thing. This can be problematic, as you may not receive the result that you wanted, believing what is present instead.

Search engine operators can act on this by ensuring that what is typed either has a suggestion for an alternate search, in which the searcher can begin to amend their mistake, increasing the chances that they find the result that they really wanted. This implementation is used by many search engines, notably Google, to make sure that those who are using their services are getting the facts and information that they deserve for their query.
